Why you look better in the mirror than in photos

You are not unphotogenic. Two things are going on: you have memorised a flipped version of your own face, and the camera was probably too close. Both are fixable.

You check yourself in the mirror on the way out, and you look fine. Then someone sends you a photo from the same evening and you wonder what happened to your face. It is such a common experience that it has its own genre of late-night searching, and the usual explanation, that you are just not photogenic, is the one thing it almost never is.

Two separate things are going on. One is about your brain, and one is about the camera. Neither is about your face.

You have memorised the wrong version of your face

Every time you look in a mirror, you see yourself reversed. Your parting falls on the other side, the eyebrow that sits slightly higher swaps over, the little asymmetry at the corner of your mouth moves. Nobody’s face is symmetrical, so the flipped version is genuinely a different picture.

You have been looking at that flipped version your whole life. It is the one you have practised expressions in. It is, as far as your sense of recognition is concerned, what you look like.

A photograph shows the other one. It is the face everyone else has been looking at, and it is the first version you have not spent years getting used to. So it reads as slightly off, in a way you cannot quite point at.

This is not a theory somebody came up with to be reassuring. In 1977, Theodore Mita, Marshall Dermer and Jeffrey Knight photographed 37 students, printed each photo twice, once normally and once mirror-flipped, and asked each person which they preferred. People preferred the mirrored version, the one they knew from the bathroom. Then the researchers showed the same pairs to those people’s friends and partners, who preferred the true version, the one they knew from real life. Everyone picked the face they had seen more often.

So when you say a photo does not look like you, you are right, in a narrow and specific sense. It does not look like the version you know. It looks like you to everybody else.

There is a practical upshot. If a photo of you feels wrong but your friends say it is lovely, believe your friends. They are looking at the face they recognise. If you want to check a photo the way others see it, flip it horizontally in any photo app and look again. Most people find the flipped copy suddenly looks normal, which is the whole effect in one move.

The camera was probably too close

The second reason is not psychological at all. It is geometry, and it is the one that actually makes a photo worse rather than just unfamiliar.

Hold your phone at arm’s length and take a selfie. Your nose is maybe 35cm from the lens. Your ears are perhaps 50cm. That is a big difference in relative terms, and the closer thing photographs bigger. So your nose comes out enlarged, your ears shrink back, and your face looks wider in the middle and flatter at the edges.

Now have someone shoot you from two metres away. Your nose is 200cm out, your ears 215cm. That difference is tiny in relative terms, so everything comes out in the proportions people actually see when they talk to you.

This is not the lens being unkind. It is distance, and it would happen with any camera. It is the single biggest reason arm’s-length selfies look unlike you and photos taken across a room look like you.

What makes it worth caring about for a work photo is that the effect is not only cosmetic. In 2012, Ronnie Bryan, Pietro Perona and Ralph Adolphs photographed faces from inside personal space and from further away, then asked people to rate them. The close-up versions scored lower for trustworthiness, competence and attractiveness, and people invested less money with them in an economic trust game. The effect held when the researchers controlled for how big the face appeared in the frame, for expression and for lighting.

Read that again with a job application in mind. Shooting from too close does not just make your nose look big. It makes strangers trust you slightly less, without being able to say why.

What to do about it

The mirror problem you cannot fix, and do not need to. Nobody else has it. Once you know why a photo feels wrong, it stops bothering you as much.

The distance problem you fix in about thirty seconds.

Use the rear camera, not the selfie camera. It is the better camera on almost every phone, and using it forces you to solve the distance problem rather than ignore it.

Get further away. Two metres is a good target. Prop the phone on a shelf, or hand it to someone.

Then zoom or crop back in. If your phone has a 2x or 3x lens, use it. If not, shoot wide from two metres and crop afterwards. Cropping a distant photo keeps the flattering proportions. Walking closer does not.

Put the camera at your own eye height. Below, and you are shooting up your nose. Above, and you get the held-out-arm look.

That is genuinely the whole fix. No new equipment, no technique to practise.

Distance is baked into the photo the moment the shutter goes. A tool can relight you, drop you on a clean background, even out your skin and crop you properly, and all of that makes a real difference. It cannot undo perspective, because that would mean rebuilding your face from a guess about what the unflattened version looks like. Anything that claims to is generating a new face rather than fixing yours.

So the order matters: get the distance right first, then let software do the rest. A photo taken from two metres in soft light is worth more than any amount of processing on one taken at arm’s length under a ceiling light.

Frequently asked questions

Am I actually unphotogenic?

Almost certainly not. What you are is unfamiliar with your own unflipped face, and often photographed from too close. The first is universal and the second is a camera position, not a property of your face.

Why do I look better in the mirror than in pictures?

Because the mirror shows you a reversed image you have seen every day for years, and familiarity reads as looking right. Your friends have the opposite experience: they prefer the photo, because that is the version they know.

Does the front camera make you look worse?

Not because of the camera itself, but because of how it is used. The front camera is normally held at arm’s length, and that short distance is what enlarges whatever is nearest the lens. The same camera at two metres with a crop would look fine.

Does zooming in fix it?

Yes, as long as you also move back. The distortion comes from how close the camera is, not from how big your face is in the frame. Stand further away and zoom or crop to fill the frame, and the proportions come out right.

What distance should I use for a headshot?

Around two metres, with a 2x or 3x lens if your phone has one, or a crop afterwards if not. Anything past about a metre and a half is a big improvement on arm’s length.
