Headshot lighting with one window and nothing bought
A window on an overcast day is a large, soft, free light source. Here is where to stand relative to it, and the two ways people get it wrong.
Light is the thing that decides whether a portrait works, and it is the one part people skip because it sounds like it needs equipment. It does not. A window is a better light source than most of what you could buy, and you already have one.
Why a window works
The quality of light comes down to one thing: how big the source looks from where you are standing.
A large source wraps around a face. Shadows have soft edges, the transition from lit to unlit is gradual, and small imperfections disappear because nothing casts a hard edge. A small source does the opposite: sharp-edged shadows, a dark line under the nose, deep sockets around the eyes.
A window a metre from your face is enormous from where you are standing. The sun, despite being the largest object most people will ever see, is very far away and therefore small from where you are standing, which is why direct sunlight is hard light.
That is the whole principle. Everything below is just applying it.
The setup that works
Overcast day, or open shade. Cloud turns the whole sky into a diffuser, which is why photographers like grey days. If it is sunny, use a window that is not getting direct sun, or wait.
Face the window. Not beside it, not with it behind you. Facing it, with the window filling most of what you can see when you look up.
Stand close to it. A metre or so. The closer you are, the bigger it is from your position, and the softer the light gets. Move away and it shrinks and hardens.
Turn off every other light in the room. This is the step people skip and it matters. Window light is blue-ish and household bulbs are orange, and mixing them puts two different colours on two halves of your face. That is genuinely hard to correct afterwards, and it looks subtly wrong even when you cannot name it.
That is the lighting done. It takes longer to find the right window than to do everything else.
Flat or shaped
Facing the window straight on gives even, flattering, slightly flat light. Nothing wrong with it and it is the safe option.
For a bit more shape, turn about thirty to forty-five degrees away from the window. Now one side of your face is lit and the other falls off gently, which gives the face dimension. This is closer to what a studio setup produces deliberately.
If the shadow side goes too dark, put something white on that side to bounce light back: a sheet of paper, a white wall, a pillowcase, an open laptop showing a white screen. Hold it just out of frame. This is what photographers call fill, and a piece of card does the same job as expensive equipment.
The two common mistakes
Window behind you. The camera exposes for the bright background, and you become a silhouette. If the phone compensates, it lifts everything and the photo turns flat and grey. Turn around.
Overhead light only. An office ceiling puts the source directly above you, which digs shadows into your eye sockets and under your nose. It is the least flattering common lighting there is, and it is what most indoor photos of people are taken in. A window beats it every time, even a small one.
There is a third, milder one: standing too far from the window. Six metres back, the window is a small bright rectangle rather than a wall of light, and the softness disappears. Walk toward it.
Checking it worked
Look at the catchlights, the small reflections of the light source in the eyes. If you can see them, the light is in front of you and the eyes will look alive. If the eyes are dark with no reflection, the light is coming from the wrong direction and the photo will look flat no matter what else you do.
Then look at the shadow under the nose. Soft, small and gradual is right. Hard-edged and dark means the source is too small or too far away.
What processing can and cannot do here
Worth being straight about, since this site processes photos.
Software can rebalance overall exposure, lift shadows, even out the difference between two sides of a face, reduce shine and add a convincing key light and rim light. All of that genuinely helps, and it is most of what makes a snapshot look studio-lit.
What it cannot do is invent information that the light destroyed. A face lit from directly overhead has dark holes where the eyes should be, and there is no detail in those pixels to recover. A blown-out highlight on a forehead from direct sun has no texture left in it. Those are gone at the moment of capture.
So the order is: get the light approximately right, which takes one decision about where to stand, then let processing do the rest.
Try it on a photo taken by a window and compare it to one taken under a ceiling light. The difference in how much the tool can do is much larger than most people expect.

Why does window light look better than a ring light?
Mostly size. A typical ring light is small compared to a window, so its shadows are harder. A big diffused source beats a small bright one for faces.
Should I use flash?
Not the built-in one. It is tiny and it sits right next to the lens, which flattens the face and produces hard shadows on the wall behind you.
What if my only window gets direct sun?
Wait for cloud, hang a white sheet or a thin curtain over it, or use a doorway facing away from the sun. Anything that makes the source bigger and softer.
Can I fix bad lighting afterwards?
Partly. Balance and shadow depth are adjustable. Detail lost in a blown highlight or a black shadow is not recoverable, because there is nothing in those pixels to work with.
