When the top of your head is cut off in a photo
You cannot put back a skull that was never photographed. But you can frame around the cut so it reads as a deliberate crop instead of a mistake.
It is one of the most common problems with an otherwise good photo. The expression is right, the eyes are sharp, and the top of your head is missing because whoever was holding the camera was looking at your face rather than at the edges of the frame.
The reason this is worth its own article is that most tools handle it badly, in a specific and recognisable way.
Why it looks so wrong
A headshot crop is built around the head. Conventionally the eyes sit about 40 to 45 per cent down the frame, the head fills 55 to 70 per cent of the height, and there is a little space above the hair.
To do that, software has to know where the top of your head is. It measures the highest visible hair pixel and works from there.
When the crown is cut off, the highest visible hair pixel is the edge of the photo. So the tool thinks your head is shorter than it is, sets the frame accordingly, and then dutifully adds space above the “top” of your head. The result is a flat-topped head sitting in the middle of a frame with clean studio background above it, which is much worse than the original problem. The photo now looks broken rather than tightly cropped.
If you have ever fed a cropped photo into a headshot tool and got back something that looked bizarre, this is almost certainly what happened.
What to do instead
The fix is to stop treating the top of the head as the reference point and use the chin instead, because the chin is visible.
Anchor the top of the frame to the cut, so there is no empty space above a flat crown. Then size the frame so the chin lands around 73 per cent of the way down, which is where it would be in a normal headshot. The eye line ends up higher in the frame than the convention, which is the honest consequence of part of the head being missing.
The result reads as a deliberately tight crop. Tight crops are a real style: they are used constantly in editorial portraiture, and nobody looks at one and thinks the photographer made a mistake. What they notice is a head floating with backdrop above it.
How this tool handles it
Ours detects the case specifically, because it kept producing exactly the broken result described above until it was fixed.
Two signals. The first is direct: if head pixels run into the top edge of the photo, the skull continues past the frame. The second is a check against anatomy, comparing where the highest visible head pixel is against where facial proportions say the crown should be, which catches cases where an earlier step has padded the image and hidden the contact with the original edge.
When it fires, the frame anchors to the cut and sizes from the chin, and the result tells you what happened in plain language, along with a rough estimate of how much of your head is missing.
We tested it by cutting a known portrait by increasing amounts. A 3 per cent cut is caught, and an uncut control reads as clean with no false positive, so normal photos keep their normal framing.
The honest recommendation
Use a different photo if you have one.
A tight crop is a legitimate style, but it removes options. You cannot produce a looser 4:5 portrait from it, you have less room to work with for different platforms, and if the cut goes below the hairline it starts to look like an accident rather than a choice.
If it is the only frame where your expression is right, use it, framed properly. A well-cropped photo with a great expression beats a badly cropped one with a mediocre expression. Just know you are trading flexibility.
Avoiding it next time
Leave more room than feels right. Cropping in afterwards is free and costs nothing. Discovering the crown is missing costs the photo.
Look at the edges of the frame, not at the face. This is the actual discipline. The face pulls your eye and the frame edges are where the mistakes are. Before you press the shutter, run your eye around the border.
Watch for the switch to portrait mode. Some phones crop slightly when portrait mode engages, so the framing you set in the preview is not quite what you get.
If someone else is shooting, tell them. “Leave space above my head” is a normal thing to ask and most people have never thought about it.
Try your photo here and see what the framing does with it. If the crown is cut, you will get a message saying so along with the result, rather than a silently strange crop.
