What can and cannot be fixed after the shutter
A simple test decides it: is the information still in the file? Background, light and crop are recoverable. Focus, motion and a cropped crown are not.
People spend a lot of effort trying to rescue photos that cannot be rescued, and throw away photos that could have been fixed in seconds. One question sorts them.
Is the information still in the file?
Editing is rearranging what was recorded. If the detail was captured, it can be adjusted. If it was never captured, or was replaced by something else, the only way to produce it is to invent it, which is a different thing with different consequences.
Fixable, because the detail is there
The background. Every pixel of you was recorded independently of every pixel of the wall. Separating them and replacing the wall changes nothing about you.
Overall exposure, within limits. A photo that is a bit dark has detail in the shadows waiting to be lifted. A photo that is a bit bright can come down.
Colour balance. The relationship between the colour channels is intact; shifting it is arithmetic.
Uneven light across the face. One side brighter than the other is a gradient, and gradients can be flattened.
Shine on skin. A shiny patch is brighter than the skin around it but still has texture underneath. Bringing it down recovers what was already recorded.
Skin unevenness, blemishes, redness. Local colour adjustments, and the underlying texture survives if you do them gently.
Crop and straightening. Free, as long as you are cutting away rather than adding.
Sharpness, a little. Increasing edge contrast makes a slightly soft photo read as crisper. Within limits.
Not fixable, because the detail was never there
Focus. If the camera focused on your ear, the detail of your eyes was never recorded. Sharpening increases the contrast of the blur. It does not create eyelashes.
Motion blur. The same, with direction. Smeared is smeared.
Blown highlights. A pure white patch on a forehead contains no values at all. There is nothing to pull back, because the sensor clipped.
Crushed shadows. Same problem at the other end. Pure black has no texture in it.
Eyes closed. Obviously, and worth stating because people ask.
A face turned away. The camera recorded one side of your head. The other side is not in the file.
A cropped crown. If the top of your head is outside the frame, the skull is not in the file. A tool can frame around it sensibly, which is what ours does, but it cannot restore what was never photographed. More on that case specifically.
Perspective distortion. A face photographed from 35cm has proportions baked in. Undoing them means rebuilding the face from a guess.
The middle ground, where the honesty question lives
Everything on the second list can be produced by a generative model. It will draw plausible eyes, a plausible crown, a plausible unblurred face. It will often look good.
What it will not be is a photograph of you at that moment. It is a reconstruction based on what faces like yours tend to look like, and the further it has to guess, the further it drifts from the person.

How to use this when choosing a frame
You have forty photos and you are picking two. The list above tells you what to weight.
Check the eyes at 100 per cent first. Sharp eyes are non-negotiable, because it is the one thing nothing downstream can fix. Do this before anything else.
Then check the expression. Also unfixable, and the thing people remember.
Then check the whole head is in frame.
Then stop caring. Background, light, colour, crop, shine, stray hairs: all fixable. A photo with a terrible background and sharp eyes beats a photo with a lovely background and soft eyes, every time, and it is not close.
That reordering is the practical payoff of this whole post. Most people choose on the things that can be fixed and ignore the things that cannot.
What this tool does
It sits entirely on the first list. It replaces backgrounds, relights, evens skin, reduces shine, lifts under-eyes, corrects teeth and hair inside their own masks, and crops to the conventional framing. Nothing is drawn.
Which means it will make a well-focused snapshot look considerably more professional, and it will do nothing for a photo where the eyes are soft. That is a limitation and also the point.

Frequently asked questions
Can you fix a blurry photo?
Not really. Sharpening increases edge contrast so the image reads as crisper, but detail that was never recorded cannot be recovered. Motion blur and missed focus are permanent.
Can you fix a photo that is too dark?
Usually yes, if it is only somewhat dark. Detail survives in shadows and can be lifted. Pure black areas have nothing in them to recover.
Can a photo where the top of the head is cut off be fixed?
Not restored, but it can be framed sensibly around the cut. The result reads as a deliberate tight crop rather than a mistake.
Is it worth retaking a photo or editing it?
Check the eyes at full size. If they are sharp and the expression is yours, edit. If either fails, retake, because those are the two things editing cannot supply.
What should I look for when choosing between frames?
Sharp eyes first, expression second, whole head in frame third. Everything else is adjustable afterwards.
